DPI (dots per inch) setting disabled, help!?

Hey the objects on my screen are wayy too big and I can never see everything. I heard that one way to fix this is to change the DPI setting. (on Win Xp) it's at display properties, settings, then ';advanced';. The only problem is that it is grayed and I cannot change it. Does anyone know how I can change it or shrink the objects on my screen another way besides the buttons on the monitor?DPI (dots per inch) setting disabled, help!?
It sounds like either

A) Your monitor/video board only has one setting or

B) You're locked out of changing it for some reason. If this is XP Pro, there might be a policy preventing you from doing this.
